Operation No Thumb

We are in official "stop sucking the thumb" mode. Elle had a dental check-up yesterday. This is the third time she has been, but this was the first time the dentist mentioned there was a possibility for a nice, long relationship with an orthodontist in our future. He asked Elle if she wanted to stop sucking her thumb, to which she replied, "yes" (yeah right!). He went on to tell her the way to stop her "baby brain" from thinking she needed to suck her thumb was by putting two special band aids around her thumb. We've done this for two days and I stocked up on Dora and Hello Kitty band aids today. She has really done well with it. It's such a habit, she doesn't even realize how much she does it. The band aids are great reminders. We are taking them off at night, which may or may not be a bad thing. I wasn't sure if she could really go cold turkey. Any of you have recovered thumb suckers? Feel free to share any pointers. I always said I wasn't going to worry about it and she would stop when she was ready, but I also don't want her to have messed up teeth. We're giving it a shot.

I'm desperate... I've tried everything. Morgan peels everything off. If it works let me know.. will she nap without her thumb?

Oh Lindsey, that is the sweetest little picture. Those thumbs do look so yummy there huh? I haven't had a thumb sucker yet(Maggie's still young), but Price loves his passy. He just turned two, but we decided, along with our doctor, that with the transition of a new sibling, the time to take something away was not the best. Good luck with all of that. I know that it is a dental nightmare, but it does look so cute.

We are all passy and it makes me SO sad. I don't know what we're going to do. I'm thinking maybe sometime soon? My dentist has said the same thing... I'd rather buy a new sofa than pay for braces...

bless 'em. they are so preciously cute. i haven't seen AC suck her thumb much if at all since she had RSV come to think of it...

would it work to put the stuff on her thumb that they use to quit biting nails (nail bitter or something like that?) i have nothing. i can get rid of pacis like a pro. thumbs are not my speciality. good luck and pass along any tips.

don't know if this would work (just a passing thought before i hit enter) is to take her to the toy store. let her pick out a toy that she really wants (set your price limit of course, but make it worth it.) then go home and make a sticker chart for her. every day she gets a sticker if she hasn't sucked her thumb. if she can quit for 3 weeks solid, then that coveted toy is hers!

Wish I could help, but NONE of mine were thumb suckers OR passy babies - sometimes I wish they were when the fussiness started, but now I'm glad they weren't so we don't have to worry about this - plenty of other things to worry about- like the biting that Wilson has begun doing at school.

As a former thumbsucker, I have NO advice. My parents somehow weaned me off to only doing it at night, and then... I hate to tell you, I didn't stop it during my sleep until I was in elementary school and going to sleepovers... !!! I didn't want to be embarrassed! Maybe the band-aids and rewards will work for you!
